In addition to being a faculty and staff newsletter, New Directions doubles as an alumni magazine. To revitalize internal interest in the publication as well as reach out to alumni in a new way, The Graduate School of Education and Human Development communications team changed the once a semester publication from a tri-fold mailer to a traditional magazine format. My challenge as the designer was to create attractive and inviting cover and feature story sections that lead into hard news sections toward the back. With budget dictating page count, space is always at a premium. The front section of the book is characterized by liberal use of space to present colorful photos emphasizing recognizable people and imagery from the graduate school's community. The second section leads into tighter, more text-abundent sections. Strict font and headline styles plus uniform folios throughout the publication fuse the two sections allowing for a seamless flow from cover to cover. Full PDF: New Directions, Winter 2007.PDF |
